Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is the largest airport in Alabama with over 7 million annual passengers. It is surrounded by Birmingham's residential neighborhoods and commercial districts. As of today, the airport is owned by the City of Birmingham. It was named after a civil rights hero, Fred Shuttlesworth, who was an American Baptist Minister and Civil Rights Activist. The airport is the busiest single-runway airport in the world, servicing all commercial flights by Southwest Airlines and Air Canada.
