It is the largest airport in Pennsylvania and the 20th busiest airport in the United States, handling over 31 million passengers per year.
PHL is a hub for American Airlines and a focus city for ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines. The airport has five runways and four terminals, and is the base of the United States Airways Shuttle.
Philadelphia International Airport traces its roots back to the 1930s, when the City of Philadelphia purchased land in the area to build a municipal airport. The first commercial flights took off from the airport in 1940, and it has been steadily growing ever since.
