Albany International Airport (IATA: ALB, ICAO: KALB, FAA LID: ALB) is a public airport seven miles (11 km) northwest of Albany, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is owned by the Albany County Airport Authority.
The airport serves the Capital District of New York State, which includes Albany and its suburbs, as well as neighboring Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. It is the largest airport in upstate New York and the fourth-busiest airport in the state behind JFK, LaGuardia, and Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The airport has two runways and two concourses (A and B). The airport is undergoing a $174 million expansion and renovation project, which began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2019. The project includes a new terminal building, a new parking garage, and an expansion of Concourse B.
In 2018, the airport served 2.85 million passengers. The airport is a hub for Delta Air Lines and Cape Air, and is served by several other airlines.
Albany International Airport was originally built in 1928 as Hudson Airport. In 1960, the airport was renamed Albany County Airport in honor of World War II pilot Lieutenant Colonel Edward F. Rulloff, who was born in Albany and died during a training exercise in Florida. In 1984, the county-owned airport was renamed Albany International Airport.
The first airline at Albany International Airport was Mohawk Airlines, which began service to Boston in October 1946. Hudson Airport was renamed Albany County Airport in 1960 in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Edward F. Rulloff, a World War II pilot from Albany who was killed in a training exercise. The first jet service at the airport was in 1961 with Mohawk’s flights to Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
In the 1970s, Albany County Airport was one of the busiest airports in the country with over 1.5 million passengers a year. However, the oil crisis of the 1970s and the recession of the early 1980s resulted in a sharp decline in air traffic. By 1986, the airport was losing $1 million a year.
In 1987, the Albany County Airport Authority was created to manage the airport. The Authority’s first task was to negotiate a new lease with the airlines. The result was a $2 million a year increase in airline payments to the Authority.
In the 1990s, the airport began to rebound with the addition of new airlines and routes. Southwest Airlines began service in 1993, followed by JetBlue in 2000. In 2008, the airport set a new record for passenger traffic with 2.7 million passengers.
In recent years, the airport has undergone a $174 million expansion and renovation project, which began in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2019. The project includes a new terminal building, a new parking garage, and an expansion of Concourse B.
In 2018, the airport served 2.85 million passengers. The airport is a hub for Delta Air Lines and Cape Air, and is served by several other airlines.
