ISP was originally built in 1942 as a military base for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The base was known as Islip Air Base and was used for training and anti-submarine patrols. After the war, the base was transferred to the Air National Guard and renamed Islip Airport.

In the early 1960s, the airport was expanded to accommodate commercial flights and renamed Long Island MacArthur Airport. Today, the airport is a major hub for domestic and international flights, with service to destinations across the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.
