Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is the primary international airport serving Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 mi) south-southwest of downtown Edmonton in Leduc County on highway 2 opposite the city of Leduc. It is operated by Edmonton Airports and is a hub facility for Northern Canada.
The airport offers scheduled non-stop flights to major cities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and Asia. YEG also serves as a focus city for WestJet. It is a hub and home base for Flair Airlines and a regional hub for Air Canada Express.
Edmonton International Airport is the largest airport by land area in Canada. It covers an area of 11,580 hectares (28,600 acres). The airport has two runways: Runway 12/30 is 3,658 meters (12,007 ft) long and can handle aircraft as large as a Boeing 747-400; Runway 16/34 is 3,200 meters (10,500 ft) long and can accommodate aircraft up to an Airbus A340-300.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is served by two passenger terminals: the Main Terminal and the South Terminal. Air Canada uses the Main Terminal, WestJet, and all other domestic and international carriers, while the South Terminal is used by Flair Airlines, Air Canada Express and other low-cost carriers.
Edmonton airport was used as a training base by the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. In 1950, the airport was renamed Edmonton City Centre Airport. In 1974, the airport was renamed Edmonton International Airport. A new terminal building was constructed in 1990. The airport has undergone several expansion projects in recent years, including constructing a new runway (16/34), a new passenger terminal (the South Terminal), and a new parking garage.
YEG airport has a variety of amenities and services for passengers, including restaurants, cafes, bars, duty-free shops, newsstands, gift shops, a children’s play area, a business center, a conference center, and an observation deck. Wireless internet is available throughout the airport.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is also home to the Alberta Aviation Museum, which has a collection of over 30 vintage aircraft.
