The Fort MacKay/Firebag Aerodrome (YFI) was built in 1958 as a military airfield. It was then transferred to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in 1967 and has been used as a civilian airport ever since.

YFI airport has two runways, one with an asphalt surface and one with a gravel surface. The asphalt runway is 1,534 meters long while the other runway is 1,854 meters long.
