Haines Airport is a public airport four miles northwest of Haines, in Haines Borough, Alaska. It’s the only airport serving Southeast Alaska. The airport is owned by the state of Alaska and operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF).
This airport was originally built as a joint civil-military airfield by the U.S. Army in 1942 and officially opened in 1943.
In 1947, responsibility for maintenance and operations was taken over by a civilian contractor under contract to the U.S. Air Force but was returned to military control in 1951.
The current airport opened in April 1997. The old airport was located about one mile south near Mile 58 of the Glenn Highway.
Haines Airport is a hub for tourism, with visitors coming to see the Haines mountain range and Kluane National Park. Tourists also come to experience glacier activities such as dog sledding and kayaking. Many of these tourists are birdwatchers who want to spot some of about 200 species of birds that have been recorded in the area.
